Match Report

Match Report - 06 Oct 2012, Harris Academy FP Hockey Club 1st Team Outdoor beat Ayr

On Saturday the 1sts entertained Ayr at DISC at the unusual time of 230 as requested by our guests due to the 100 mile rule infrequently used by teams which means games must be played between noon and 3pm if travel is over 100 miles (funnily enough!). Highland have come from further and faced us at 1130 but each to their own!

The Harris team had to make a few changes from last weeks victory on the road to Largs; Chico is on his trip to visit the pharaohs, Neily Martin was on the golf course and Cameron Smart was also unavailable. Up stepped Hamish Gault and Finlay Wright to take their places in the first team.

The umpire didn’t show up on time (not helped by the fact that he was trying to contact Neily Martin who was busy working on his golf swing with fellow dentists and/or degenerates with their hot tub time machine!) so we had to utilise the skills of Scottish Hockey President Martin Boag for about 10 minutes until Ross Dixon turned up.

Although we started sluggishly we scored twice both Albert first running round the keeper before dispatching it in and then from a corner. Then there was a nightmare of a decision from Ross, sending off Gavin Martin for having a boy run into him! We managed to save the resultant corner but were now a man short. Time to call up the experience of Roy Dowie to cover the Gavin shaped hole at the back! Whilst Gavin was off Albert managed to get his hat trick after driving down the right and slotting it into the bottom left hand corner. When Gavin did get back on the expert management team decided to make it a bit easier for Ayr by continuing to play with 10 men for a bit of fun!

In the second half some dodgy passing at the back gifted possession to Ayr a couple of times before they managed to break into the Harris D. The hard working tracking back of Jimi Simpson was undone slightly by the ponsy esque girly jump backwards he did right in front of his keeper as the Ayr forward took an eternity to hit the ball on his reverse (flat as a pancake it should be pointed out) into the back post for a glimpse of a comeback.

Harris were shaken out of complacency and finally a player other than Albert scored for Harris during this league campaign, Pete Black fired a great ball into the D that missed everyones stick (esp Greg “the pegs” Whittet) and hit off the Ayr goalie. He was visibly pissed off by this error but a goal is a goal.

With about 10 minutes to go Albert had a great run beating 3 players coming across the top of the D before latching onto the ball with his reverse stick and putting it into the top corner. Although when he tried to complete this feat shortly afterwards he made a right erse of it!

All credit to Ayr they pushed hard in final minutes of the match and were rewarded when after a bizarre goalkeeping error (never sort your pads out when Williams has the ball in your half) they managed to score after a number of blocked efforts. Promptly on this the final whistle went.

Albert deservedly won the man of his match award for his goals and great runs. Pete Black won admiration for his ability to play with a broken hand after taking a blow during the first half. The 2 young lads Findlay and Hamish showed great promise and work rate during the game, Dowie brought his experience (you would hope so as his age was still more than the 2 young lads ages combined!) and Ally promised to never sort his kickers out whilst the ball was in our half! A good 5-2 victory against a previously unbeaten team was a great confidence boost for the season ahead.

Editors note - after the game the Ayr team were invited back to Fortress Clarks for some sarnies and soup! Ironically it was now to late for them
