Match Report - 13 Oct 2012, Harris Academy FP Hockey Club 1st Team Outdoor drew with Aberdeen University
Harris travelled to Aberdeen to take on Aberdeen Uni on a very wet Saturday. After a week of injuries/holidays we managed to take a strong squad of 13 through. Roy Dowie was a welcome return in the starting line up at the tender age of 52.
A few major changes were made to the starting line up with Gavin playing his first game in centre midfield and Neil finding himself upfront. (Neil has now almost played every position possible and the season is only 5 games old!)
Harris required a good start and it was provided by top goalscorer Albert, a terrific run through the uni defence followed by an excellent finish put Harris ahead. Harris were looking comfortable in the first half and were creating good goalscoring chances . The next chance came after Neil found himself on the baseline and he then gave a pass to the penalty spot area to find Albert who somehow managed to miss ! Albert maintains the pass was out of his reach - aye right ! However next came Neil, after play was broken up in midfield by Gavin (one of his 6 touches during the game) he played Neil through for a one on one with the keeper . All the hard work was done taking the ball around the keeper , but the finish somehow hit the outside of the goal ! Neil was to make amends 5 minutes later though with a poachers finish on the volley at the back post after the keepers initial save to make it 2-0. Harris also won a couple of short corners in the first half but some dodgy pushing (included in Gavins touch count) led to a breakdown. So Harris went into the second half 2-0 up.
We knew we needed a third goal early into the second half to pile the pressure on the uni team . And after great work between Albert and Hamish a tidy reverse stick shot from Albert put Harris 3-0 up and should have put the game beyond doubt for us ! However Harris seemed to hit the self destruct button with ten minutes to go and let the uni team back into the game after letting in a soft short corner . Another short corner led to a similar move and another goal to make it 3-2 with 5 minutes to go. Then the drama unfolded, The ball was played into the D flat along the ground , wary of not wanting to give away another short corner Gavin put his hand flat on the ground and ball smashed blatantly off of his left hand ! However both umpires decided it had hit the arm despite the ball going flat along the ground ! Maybe Victor planted something for this mysterious unseen bobble who knows ??? And the very swollen index finger which was pointed out to the umpire must have been a good indication that he was wrong ! But he was having none of it and the decision stood . The result from the short corner , saw the ball come off Gavin on the line and a penalty was the decision. A poor penalty saw its way past Ally somehow and the score ended up 3-3 . Harris were gutted but credit must be payed to Aberdeen Uni for the grit and determination shown to stage such a comeback.
So Harris left with a point and are still undefeated in the league and will have to learn from this experience and make sure we take our chances in the future and put the games beyond doubt !
